NTT Docomo Hit by Nationwide Outage Affecting 5G SA Users

NTT Docomo reported a nationwide disruption to voice calls, data and SMS on November 5. It later said only subscribers on its 5G SA service are affected.

NTT Docomo said around midday on November 5 that its mobile service was hard to use across Japan. Voice calls, data connections and SMS were all affected.

The company's first announcement also covered MVNO services that run on Docomo's network. That was later corrected. As of an update at 3:20 p.m., Docomo said the problem affects only customers with its "5G SA" contract, not MVNO users.

What Docomo has said so far

The company said it was still confirming when the trouble began. It was also checking whether emergency calls were affected. Docomo said it would publish further details once confirmed, along with a new estimate for restoration.

The outage follows another notice issued earlier the same morning. Docomo said it had judged that unauthorized access from outside was highly likely. It had suspended the Docomo Online Shop and the My docomo portal for emergency maintenance while it investigated the cause. The material provided does not say whether the two incidents are connected.

What affected users can try

A follow-up report indicates that users on 5G SA may be able to regain service by switching their phone to 4G and restarting it. Docomo has not said this is a guaranteed fix, and the cause of the disruption has not been disclosed.

Why it matters

A failure of voice, data and SMS at the same time on a major carrier can hit daily communication, authentication codes sent by text, and business use. The narrowed scope, limited to 5G SA subscribers, should reassure many customers and MVNO users. Those on affected plans still have to wait for an official timeline. Docomo has promised further updates on the extent of the impact and the expected recovery.
