Polish café chain Green Caffè Nero has begun working with the food-waste app Foodsi. Unsold baked goods from 95 of its cafés in Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław, Gdańsk and Gdynia are now offered in the app as Surprise Bags. Each bag has a regular value of PLN 50 and sells for PLN 24.99.

The partnership launches in all 95 locations at once. Near closing time, each café lists bags of products that did not sell that day: sandwiches, baguettes, croissants, sweet and savoury pastries, and cakes baked each morning at the chain's Warsaw production facility. Users reserve and pay in the app, then collect the bag during a pickup window set by the café. For the chain, it is a way to turn daily surplus into revenue and cut food waste, without changing production or adding logistics.

Part of a wider waste strategy

Bartosz Dudra, deputy chief operating officer at Green Caffè Nero, said joining Foodsi helps the company reduce losses and make better use of what its cafés prepare. He described it as a solution that benefits app users, the chain and the planet.

The move follows other steps. Since early 2023 the chain has collected used coffee grounds, which are processed and used to fertilise plants in its cafés and gardens. It has replaced plastic straws with paper ones, and customers who bring a reusable cup get 2 loyalty stamps per coffee or tea instead of 1.

Foodsi's growing catalogue

Green Caffè Nero joins a list of national brands selling surplus through Foodsi, which now has more than 2.5 million users. Partners include Carrefour, Leroy Merlin, Sokołów, Salad Story, Thai Wok, Cukiernia Sowa, Kuchnia Vikinga, Pasibus, Koku Sushi, Campanile, YOPE, Charlotte, AVIA and BP petrol stations. Thousands of local bakeries, restaurants and shops also use the app.

Mateusz Kowalczyk, Foodsi's CEO and co-founder, said many users know and like the brand and can now rescue its fresh products through the app. He pointed to the price of PLN 24.99 for a bag with a regular value of PLN 50.
