Google and XREAL began selling the XREAL AURA, an Android XR-powered pair of XR glasses, in the United States, Canada and South Korea on October 28 (US time). In Japan, sales start on November 2, with shipments beginning in mid-November.

Japanese pricing is set at 229,800 yen for the 12 GB/256 GB model and 269,800 yen for the 16 GB/512 GB version.

Light frame, separate compute pack

Developed with Google and Qualcomm, the AURA uses optical see-through (OST) technology. The glasses are split from a separate compute pack connected by cable, which keeps the frame at 95 g or less. The pack houses Qualcomm's Snapdragon Reality Elite chip and the battery.

The field of view reaches up to 70 degrees. Two sizes are offered depending on interpupillary distance: M for 60 to 66 mm and L for 66 to 72 mm.

Apps, Gemini and viewing features

Built on Android XR, the glasses support millions of apps from Google Play and more than 150 XR-specific apps. Users can place several apps in space at once, including browsers, documents and music. A PC screen can appear as a window, Bluetooth keyboards and mice can be connected, and the compute pack can serve as a trackpad.

Gemini is supported for tasks such as organizing windows or asking about what is on display. When users share their view with Gemini, it can highlight points of interest in the real world or on screen.

For video, YouTube and Google TV content can be placed anywhere in the space. The lenses can darken to hide the surroundings and return to transparent when a person enters the field of view. The glasses can also show videos, photos and games in 3D, keep the screen fixed in front of the user, and automatically move it to the edge of vision while the wearer is on the move.
