OpenAI Brings ChatGPT Dots AI Agents to iMessage and Google Messages

OpenAI now lets you text your ChatGPT Dot agent through iMessage on iPhone or Google Messages on Android. It is a US-only preview for Pro subscribers.

OpenAI has started rolling out text messaging for ChatGPT Dots, letting users talk to their AI agents directly from iMessage on iPhone or Google Messages on Android over RCS. The feature is a preview limited to ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the United States.

Dots are autonomous personal assistants that OpenAI introduced last month. They run in the background and handle tasks on a user's behalf. Until now, they were available only in ChatGPT, Slack and Microsoft Teams. Messaging puts them in the app people already use for everyday conversations, with no need to open a dedicated app.

Proactive updates, not just replies

A Dot can write first. If you asked it to watch the price of a product or keep track of a trip you are planning, it will text you when it spots a change it considers relevant. You can hand it tasks using text, photos or voice notes, and it can reply with more than text, including photos and voice notes.

The agent keeps the context of conversations held elsewhere and has access to the same connected plugins. You can begin planning something in the main ChatGPT interface and carry on by text without explaining it again. To set it up, open the profile of the Dot in question and choose the messaging option.

Privacy and availability

OpenAI says the channel is secure: only you can text your Dot, and your Dot can only text you. Turning the option on does not give the agent any view into your other private conversations, according to the company.

For now, the feature is available only to ChatGPT Pro users in the US. OpenAI has not said when it will reach other countries or other plans, free or paid.
