WhatsApp Adds Four Group Chat Features, From Permanent Pins to Group Status
WhatsApp has highlighted four group chat updates: pins with no expiry, history sharing for new members, group status and a filter for unread mentions.

WhatsApp has put the spotlight on four updates to group chats, all aimed at making busy conversations easier to follow and important messages easier to find. According to the company's official blog, the tools help users catch up on discussions even after being away for a while.
Permanent pins and history sharing
Messages can now be pinned in groups indefinitely. Until now, pinning was tied to fixed time periods. Keeping key announcements and information at the top of the chat should make them easier for members to reach.
The feature that shares recent message history with new members has also been extended. The app previously sent recent messages automatically when someone was added, with the option to switch this on or off. Now a user can send the latest messages to someone who has already joined by tapping their name in the conversation. WhatsApp says messages sent this way stay protected by end-to-end encryption, like other chats.
Group status and a mentions filter
Group status lets members share updates, photos and daily moments with one specific group rather than with all their contacts. Members can view and react to these statuses and post their own. As with regular statuses, they disappear automatically after 24 hours.
A new chat filter shows unread groups in which the user was directly mentioned or received replies to their messages. It also covers group-wide mentions made with @all, so people can jump to conversations that need attention without scrolling through every unread message.
Other organizing tools
WhatsApp also pointed to tools for managing discussions. Users can reply privately to a member without cluttering the main conversation, and can turn off multiple answers when creating a poll to get a single response. Member profiles let people add identifying details within each group, for example a parent of a student in a parents' group or the treasurer of a volunteer group.
The updates reflect the growing role of groups in both personal and professional communication, and WhatsApp's push to make managing messages and following conversations simpler.
