Samsung Galaxy Buds 4 Pro and 3 Pro Get Korean Hearing Aid Approval

Samsung has won approval from Korea's food and drug regulator for Hearing Test and Hearing Aid features on Galaxy Buds 4 Pro and Buds 3 Pro, arriving via update early next year.

Samsung has received approval from South Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for two health features on its premium Galaxy Buds: Hearing Test and Hearing Aid. Both are due to arrive on the Galaxy Buds 4 Pro and Galaxy Buds 3 Pro through a software update early next year, the company said.

How the hearing test works

Hearing Test will be available from the earbuds' settings on a connected smartphone. It is an air-conduction test that plays tones at different frequencies to find the faintest sounds the user can hear, and each ear is tested separately.

Results are sorted into seven levels, from normal hearing to profound hearing loss. Where needed, the feature offers recommendations or follow-up steps.

Personalized amplification

The Hearing Aid feature builds on the test results. Rather than simply raising overall volume, it tailors amplification to each user's needs and adjusts the frequencies that are hardest to hear. Samsung uses the NAL-NL2 formula, developed by Australia's national acoustic laboratories and widely used worldwide, a medical standard for optimizing amplification based on individual hearing characteristics.

Hearing test results and noise-exposure data will be linked to the Samsung Health app, so users can follow their hearing health over time.

Why it matters

Samsung obtained US FDA clearance for the Hearing Aid feature on Galaxy Buds last August. The Korean approval strengthens the case that the feature is close to launch, and it will reach existing devices by update rather than new hardware. That would turn the Buds 4 Pro and Buds 3 Pro into licensed assistive medical devices, bringing hearing support to ordinary earbuds that many people already own.

The update is expected in early next year.
