iPhone Duo Owners Report Display Cracks Near the Hinge

As the first deliveries of the iPhone Duo reach customers, a small number of early owners are reporting display defects. Affected phones have developed cracks or bright lines along the inner screen, and the damage appears close to the hinge.

Reports have come from Australia, the U.S., Canada and China. One Australian owner said his display cracked after fewer than 20 folds, with no visible damage beforehand. Apple replaced the device. It is far too early to say whether the cases point to a wider hardware problem or just a handful of defective units.

A similar spot in many reports

Several of the failures appear around the same point near the hinge. One Reddit user suggested the inner display could be getting pinched in that area. Others have floated assembly tolerances or a faulty hinge component, particularly because at least one failure reportedly happened while the phone was being opened, not closed.

Some reviewers, meanwhile, have folded the Duo repeatedly without any display trouble, so nothing so far suggests that every unit is vulnerable.

Foldables are hard to build

First-generation problems are not unusual for foldables. Samsung has spent years refining the hinges, display structure and durability of its Galaxy Z Fold line, yet display failures have still been reported on the Galaxy Z Fold 2, Fold 3, Fold 4 and, most recently, the Z Fold 7.

For now, a few faulty phones are not enough to call this a design flaw. The picture would change if more failures keep appearing around the same part of the hinge. Apple has not publicly addressed these specific reports. Until it does, or until considerably more cases surface, it remains unclear whether this is an early defective batch or something more fundamental.
