Apple must allow third-party app stores on iPhone in Australia
Australia's Federal Court has ordered Apple to open the iPhone to third-party app stores and sideloading from March 1, 2027, handing Epic Games another win.

Australia's Federal Court has ruled that Apple must allow third-party app stores and sideloading on the iPhone, a fresh victory for Epic Games. The requirement takes effect on March 1, 2027, as GSMArena reports. An extension to May 3 is possible, but only if the court approves it.
The order follows last year's ruling, in which an Australian court found that both Apple and Google had violated local competition laws. The dispute began when Epic wanted to use an alternative payment system for Fortnite, after which both companies removed the game from their app stores over its use of V-Bucks, the in-game currency.
What Apple has to change
Beyond permitting alternative app stores and installing apps from websites, Apple must allow alternative payment options, including external payment links. It also has to restrict the fees it charges on alternative distribution and payment methods, and remove other barriers, such as opening the APIs that third-party app stores need to operate. The rules apply to users with Australian accounts.
Apple told Reuters it plans to appeal the decision.
Where this fits globally
Third-party app stores are already permitted in the EU, Brazil and Japan, though Epic remains unhappy with how Apple implemented the rules in the EU. In the US, alternative app stores are not allowed, but developers can show external payment links and offer alternative payment options.
For Australian iPhone owners, the change could mean more choice in where they get apps and potentially different pricing. Fortnite is expected to return to the Australian App Store soon. With an appeal coming, the exact shape and timing of the changes may still shift.
