Bethesda has named the next Elder Scrolls game The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, more than eight years after the first teaser, with desert clues pointing to Hammerfell.

Bethesda has finally given its next role-playing game a name: The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. The reveal comes more than eight years after the first teaser and forms part of the studio's 40th anniversary celebrations.

The announcement came in a video of more than eight minutes led by Todd Howard, the director of the series. The name itself appeared for only a few seconds, together with the logo and a handful of hints about the setting. The teaser shows dune sand and what looks like an Elder Scroll, the ancient scrolls that hold secrets about the past and future of the universe.

Hammerfell looks likely

The imagery supports rumors that the game will take place in Hammerfell, a region at the western edge of Tamriel. It borders Skyrim to the northeast and Cyrodiil to the east, is the homeland of the Redguards and contains the arid Alik'r desert. Redguards have been a playable race in earlier games, and parts of Hammerfell also appear in The Elder Scrolls Online: Alik'r is in the base game, while Bangkorai, Craglorn and Abah's Landing are in DLC.

Engine and release window

Story and gameplay details remain unknown. The game will use Creation Engine 3, the next version of the engine behind Bethesda's titles, built for massive open worlds. Unlike the version used in Starfield, it is meant to remove loading screens between zones. Other improvements include a micropolygon system that adds detail as players approach objects, ray tracing support, better physics, optimization for handheld consoles and an architecture that can support other games, such as Fallout 5.

Bethesda faces pressure to deliver, and rumors suggest a release in roughly two years. The studio has a reputation for long delays, but Xbox's new leadership has introduced measures to speed up development and focus on major franchises. If all goes well, The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel could arrive in 2028 on Xbox and PC. A PlayStation 5 version has not been confirmed.
