Apple Cuts Employees' Daily AI Tool Budgets to Rein In Costs
Apple has lowered the daily AI spending cap for some engineers from $300 to $200 and is weighing deeper cuts as token costs for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini climb.

Apple has begun reducing the daily budgets its employees can spend on AI tools. The company has cut the daily AI spending limit for some engineers from $300 to $200 as part of an effort to keep costs under control.
Apple is reportedly considering lowering the cap further, to $100 a day, for some engineering teams. Certain non-engineering teams already operate with a $100 daily limit, and the company is said to be weighing a reduction to $25 for them. The budgets cover the cost of tokens consumed when staff use AI models such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini.
Exceptions and context
Employees who need more than their allotted amount can ask senior managers for an exception. Apple has not yet made an official statement on the matter.
The move stands out because Apple is also trying to expand the use of AI in its own operations and engineering processes. As generative AI tools spread inside companies, the token costs they generate are drawing closer scrutiny from technology firms.
Apple is not alone. Goldman Sachs has also restricted access to some AI-based coding tools after assessing productivity and risk, according to Reuters.
Why it matters
The developments point to a shift in corporate attitudes. After an early phase in which companies encouraged staff to use as much AI as possible, they now appear to be looking for a clearer balance between the productivity gains the tools deliver and the costs they create. For engineers and other employees, that could mean tighter limits and more internal approval steps when heavy AI use is needed.
