Meta France Plans About 100 Job Cuts as US Tech Trims Staff

Meta France reportedly plans around 100 departures among 300 staff, mostly in sales. Microsoft, Dell, HPE and Google have also cut jobs in France.

Meta France is reportedly finalizing a plan that would see about 100 of its 300 employees leave, mainly in sales teams. The project was revealed on 4 November by La Lettre. It follows a collective contractual termination scheme the company negotiated in France in 2023, capped at 88 departures.

Meta is not alone. Microsoft, Dell, IBM, HPE and Google have all reduced headcount in France in recent years, through voluntary departures, site closures or consolidation of activities. The scale of each plan, however, is hard to compare: the number of targeted posts, accepted applications and net change in staff are three different measures.

The figures, plan by plan

At Microsoft France, a 31 July 2025 agreement allowed up to 204 voluntary departures. Annual accounts show 123 people were concerned by 31 October, with a €71 million provision. Dell signed a collective termination scheme on 8 December 2025 capped at 280 departures, plus a September 2026 agreement, in force since 1 November, allowing up to 130 mobility or end-of-career leaves per nine-month period. Google confirmed to Reuters that it has offered paid voluntary departures to some French staff since June 2026.

At HPE, an April 2026 agreement provides for up to 121 voluntary departures; by 20 May, the CFTC union reported 79 accepted applications, 65 of them from employees over 58. IBM's planned 328 departures for 2026 were cancelled in April. Salesforce, after a 2023 deal capped at 153 departures, announced hiring in France in cybersecurity, data and agentic AI.

Design work and AI in the mix

Microsoft confirmed in February a closure plan affecting about 100 engineers at an engineering center refocused on AI. In Lyon, the planned closure of video game studio Arkane would affect 217 jobs, with employee consultation reportedly extended to 13 December to explore options, including finding a partner.

What it means

These schemes rest on voluntary participation and need no economic justification, so they can accompany reorganization even as companies post strong results. Meanwhile investment pledges continue: Amazon cites over €15 billion in France for 2026–2028, Microsoft €4 billion announced in 2024. The open question is which French subsidiaries will keep design, development and customer-support functions, rather than seeing them regrouped abroad.
