SoFi has launched SOFIE, a tokenized deposit product aimed at crypto users that offers a 4.4% annual percentage yield (APY) and FDIC insurance. Holders also have the option to convert their balance into SoFiUSD.

The combination is notable because it pairs an on-chain style product with the deposit protections of a traditional bank account. Many crypto-native dollar products do not carry that kind of insurance, which is one reason a regulated, insured alternative that still pays interest draws attention.

What SOFIE offers

According to the company, SOFIE is a tokenized deposit, meaning a bank deposit represented in token form rather than a separate asset backed by reserves. The 4.4% APY places it in the range of competitive savings products while targeting people who already hold or move funds in crypto markets.

The conversion option to SoFiUSD gives users a path between the interest-bearing deposit and the company's dollar-denominated token. Further details, such as eligibility, supported networks, fees and any limits on conversions, were not part of the announcement material available.

Why it matters

Tokenized deposits are increasingly seen as a way for banks to compete with stablecoins. Unlike most stablecoins, they are liabilities of a bank, which can allow deposit insurance to apply and interest to be paid directly to holders. SoFi's launch puts a concrete, yield-bearing example of that model in front of retail crypto users.

For customers, the practical question will be how easily SOFIE can be used across crypto platforms and how the rate holds up over time, since APYs on deposit products can change. For the wider market, the product adds to growing pressure on stablecoin issuers and other crypto firms to offer yield and stronger consumer protections.

SoFi has not been reported to have shared additional rollout timing in the material available, so further details on availability are the next thing to watch.
