Sega's Chain Chronicle Faces 1–2 Months of Maintenance Over Security Flaw

Sega says its 13-year-old mobile RPG Chain Chronicle will stay offline for at least one to two months after a security problem was found in some systems.

Sega has announced that its smartphone RPG Chain Chronicle will remain under maintenance for at least one to two months after the company confirmed a security problem in some of its systems. The announcement came on October 30. According to Sega, no unauthorized access or data leak has been confirmed so far.

The emergency maintenance began at around 5 p.m. on October 23 to secure the game app and its servers. Follow-up investigation showed that simply updating the affected system would not be enough to fix the issue. Sega says a large-scale overhaul of the entire app may be necessary.

Timeline and impact

The company estimates that investigating what needs to be rebuilt will take about a month, and the work that follows could take a similar amount of time. Sega stressed that the schedule may change depending on how the work progresses.

The outage affects in-game events, login bonuses, consecutive-login counts and the benefits of the paid Royal Plan subscription. Sega said it will announce details of compensation for players once they are decided.

Why it matters

Chain Chronicle launched in July 2013 and reached its 13th anniversary in 2026, making it one of the longer-running titles in Japan's mobile game market. A shutdown of one to two months is unusually long for a live-service game, and the possibility of rebuilding the whole app suggests the problem is rooted in the app's design rather than a simple bug.

For players, the practical consequences are lost login streaks and paid-plan benefits until service resumes, with compensation still to be defined. Sega has not given a restart date, so updates on the investigation and on compensation are the next things to watch.
