OpenAI has announced it will acquire Pierre Computer, a developer of infrastructure for storing code and of tools for working with Git. Once the deal closes, OpenAI plans to build the company's Code Storage capabilities directly into Codex.

What Pierre builds

Pierre previously introduced Code Storage, a service that lets applications create Git repositories, store code and track the history of changes. The system is designed in part for AI agents, allowing them to work on many tasks at the same time and to commit changes to projects regularly.

Some of Pierre's technology is already used in Codex. The Trees library helps users move quickly through a project's files, while Diffs shows code changes and lets users edit code right during review. A third tool, Highlights, handles real-time syntax highlighting, including when the code is generated by AI.

What happens next

After the transaction is completed, existing customers of the service will be able to use the Code Storage features inside Codex. Pierre's open-source projects will remain open.

The deal fits a broader push by OpenAI to strengthen its own version-control foundations. The company recently described how it scales Git internally with Pando, a server-side version control system it developed for engineers and agents. According to OpenAI, that infrastructure stays fully compatible with standard Git tools, handles around a petabyte of data every day and cuts push latency by almost a factor of five.

For developers, the acquisition signals that coding agents like Codex are being treated as full participants in the software workflow, which means they need storage, review and editing tools built for heavy, parallel and frequent changes. Financial terms and the closing date were not disclosed in the material provided.
