Musk Says Grok Bot Costs Far Exceed Revenue as Limits Tighten

Elon Musk says running xAI's Grok Bot agent costs far more than it earns, after paying subscribers reported weekly usage allowances running out unusually fast.

Elon Musk has said the cost of running Grok Bot, xAI's AI agent, is unsustainably high compared with the revenue it generates. The comment follows complaints from paying subscribers that their weekly usage allowances were being used up faster than expected.

Some users said their consumption meter jumped from 50 percent to 100 percent during hours when they were not using Grok Bot at all. Responding on X on November 1 to a user who asked for a weekly quota reset, Musk said the cost of delivering the service remains very high relative to income. He did not share figures for operating costs or for Grok Bot's revenue.

What Grok Bot does

Grok Bot launched in August as an early beta. It is positioned as an AI agent that works on its own virtual computer and can act on apps and online services. Beyond answering questions, it can carry out multi-step tasks and keep working in the background.

The service is available under certain paid SuperGrok and Cursor subscriptions. Its usage allowance is calculated separately from other Grok and Cursor quotas, so exhausting the Grok Bot limit does not mean a subscriber's other entitlements in those products have run out.

Financial context

The remark has to be read alongside the growth of the company's AI business. According to SpaceX's third-quarter results, the Super Intelligence unit recorded 7.5 billion dollars in revenue and 431 million dollars in profit. That unit-level profitability does not by itself show that Grok Bot is economically sustainable, and Musk's comment points directly at the cost-versus-revenue balance of this one service.

What remains unclear

For subscribers, uncertainty persists. It has not been announced what level the weekly limits will be set at, whether existing allowances will be reset, or how any changes will differ across subscription tiers.
