Gallium Defence Raises €7.1M Seed for Low-Cost Drone Detection
Paris-based Gallium Defence has emerged from stealth with a €7.1 million seed round to offer drone detection at a fraction of the cost of legacy systems.
Paris-based startup Gallium Defence has come out of stealth with a €7.1 million seed round, aiming to bring drone detection to market at a fraction of the cost of legacy systems.
The round was led by Keen Venture Partners and 360 Capital. Omnes Capital and Polytechnique Ventures also took part. The announcement coincided with European Defence Week.
Cheaper detection as the pitch
Gallium Defence positions itself on price. Traditional detection systems are typically expensive, which limits how widely they can be deployed. By offering a considerably cheaper alternative, the company is betting that more sites and operators will be able to afford coverage against unauthorised or hostile drones.
The company has not been described in the announcement in further technical detail here, so questions about the specific sensors, range or customers remain open for now.
Why it matters
Drones have become a growing concern for armed forces, infrastructure operators and public authorities across Europe. Affordable detection is a precondition for any response, since an object that cannot be seen cannot be tracked or countered. A French startup backed by established European investors, including a fund linked to the Polytechnique ecosystem, adds to a wave of defence-focused young companies seeking to compete with long-established suppliers.
The seed funding gives Gallium Defence capital to scale its offering, according to the announcement. Emerging from stealth during European Defence Week also puts the company in front of the buyers and partners gathered around the event, which is likely to be an early test of demand for lower-cost detection in the market.
