Entire Takes On GitHub: CEO Says Developers Want a New Platform

Entire CEO Thomas Dohmke says developers want an alternative to GitHub and plans to open-source its Git storage system, as GitHub's COO argues scale and community win.

Entire CEO Thomas Dohmke says developers should be free to choose where their code lives, and that the future of software and open source should not rest in the hands of a few large companies. "GitHub may think the world doesn't need a new GitHub, but developers clearly want one," he said on October 29 local time.

The remarks answer GitHub COO Kyle Daigle, who said at a press briefing during GitHub Universe 26 in San Francisco that he does not believe the world needs a new GitHub. What it needs, Daigle argued, is an AI platform that evolves with the times.

Open-sourcing the Git layer

To back up its argument, Entire plans to release as open source the Git storage system that holds code and change history. GitHub is the hub for countless open-source projects, but its own platform source code is not public. Entire is presenting the open foundation as a point of difference, and Dohmke said it is building the platform so data can be stored in several regions around the world.

On October 27, a day before GitHub Universe opened, Entire unveiled a standalone AI development platform covering code storage, management, review and testing. Its main differentiator is code review. If people must check every change an AI writes, overall speed is limited. So Entire replaces the pull request with "Trails": multiple AI agents assess code quality and repeatedly fix the problems they find. According to the company, once all criteria are met, a developer can merge changes without reading every line.

GitHub bets on scale and community

GitHub says it will respond with its scale and operating experience. Daigle said the company supports more than 225 million developers and is reworking core features and infrastructure around how AI agents work. He also named the developer community as a key strength, arguing that places to share work and learn together matter more as development methods change quickly.

The rivalry has an unusual link to GitHub's parent. Microsoft's venture arm M12 took part in Entire's $60 million seed round announced on February 10, which valued the startup at $300 million. Felicis led the round, and Madrona was among the participants. M12's individual stake was not disclosed. Daigle said M12 often invests in developers that compete with Microsoft products.
