Anthropic has made background subagents in Claude Code cheaper to run. In a post on X on November 5, 2026, the company said these subagents now consume less of a user's usage limit, because their routine status updates are about 99% less costly.

What changed

A running background subagent refreshes its status line every 30 seconds. Until now, each refresh re-read the subagent's entire conversation. According to Anthropic, Haiku 5.5 now writes the update from short notes instead, which is what brings the cost of that step down by roughly 99%.

Overall, the change amounts to about a 5% reduction in usage, which the company describes as room for roughly 6% more prompts within the same limit.

Which subagents benefit

Subagents are helper agents that a main agent launches and hands work to. They keep the main context from getting cluttered and let several tasks of the same kind run in parallel.

They come in two modes. Background subagents take on independent jobs such as research or code review while the parent agent continues with other work. Foreground subagents are used when the parent agent must wait for the result before moving on, and they require explicit configuration. Only the background type gets the savings.

Since background is the default unless the user sets otherwise, the lower cost should apply in most everyday cases.

Why it matters

For developers who lean on parallel agents, long-running subagents were a quiet drain on the usage allowance, because each periodic update repeated the full conversation. Swapping that for a short summary written by a small model trims that overhead without changing how the feature works. The savings are limited to this one step, though, which is why the overall figure is 5% rather than 99%.
