ChatGPT Helps Reddit User Find Lost Bose Earbud in Gravel

A Reddit user found a lost wireless earbud in white gravel after uploading a photo to ChatGPT. His post drew more than 2,800 likes and a debate on everyday AI uses.

A Reddit user says he found a lost wireless earbud within minutes by uploading a photo of the search area to ChatGPT, which spotted the tiny device among white gravel.

The earbud fell out of his jacket pocket. He spent about 10 minutes searching by hand without success. The usual trick of playing a sound from the paired phone did not work: according to the user, his Bose earbuds only connect fully once they are detected in the ear, so there was no easy way to make the missing one beep.

He then photographed the ground and asked ChatGPT to locate the device. "I use ChatGPT for a lot of things, and suddenly I thought of asking it for help instead of scanning the area myself for nothing," he wrote. The chatbot analyzed the image and pinpointed the earbud. He said the whole process, from uploading the photo to picking up the earbud, took under five minutes, adding: "Honestly, I don't think I would have ever found it without ChatGPT."

Reactions: practical AI in daily life

The post collected more than 2,800 likes and sparked a discussion about using AI tools for everyday problems rather than only for writing, coding or answering questions. One commenter noted how far image recognition in ChatGPT has come, pointing out that the ability to zoom in and inspect different parts of a picture makes it especially useful for tasks like this.

Another user asked the author to share the exact prompt he used, hoping to learn how to phrase requests to get clearer, more useful answers. A third defended practical uses of AI, saying he was tired of people dismissing the technology because some use it for trivial things, "just like the internet, honestly."

The episode is anecdotal, but it shows how image-analysis features are moving into small, real-life situations where traditional searching falls short.
