Biograil raises €20 million for oral alternative to injections

Copenhagen biotech Biograil has closed a €20 million round to advance an oral device that delivers therapeutics which would otherwise have to be injected.

Copenhagen-based biotech company Biograil has closed a €20 million funding round to develop an oral device that delivers therapeutics normally administered by injection.

The round was backed by Verve Ventures and Megatrend Invest. HTGF, which led the company's Seed syndicate in 2019, also took part, investing through its HTGF Opportunity growth fund.

Why it matters

Many modern therapeutics, particularly biologic drugs, cannot simply be swallowed as a standard pill and are therefore given by injection. That can be a burden for patients, who often face needles, clinic visits or regular self-administration. An oral delivery device that achieves the same result would change how such treatments are taken.

Biograil is working on exactly this approach: a device designed to carry drugs that would otherwise require injection through oral administration. The new capital gives the company further runway to advance its technology.

Investor continuity

The participation of HTGF underlines continuity among backers. The fund led the Seed syndicate in 2019 and is now returning through its growth-stage vehicle, a sign of continued confidence in the company's progress since then.

The company has not been described here with further details on clinical stages or specific drug partners, and those points remain to be communicated. For now, the round marks a significant financial step for a Danish biotech aiming to offer patients a needle-free option for treatments that today depend on injections.
