VW ID. Unyx 08, First Car Built With Xpeng, Struggles in China

Volkswagen's first model developed with Xpeng, the ID. Unyx 08, was meant to help revive the brand in China. Sales reportedly stay at around 250 units a month.

Volkswagen's ID. Unyx 08, the first car the German carmaker has produced together with Chinese partner Xpeng, is failing to find buyers. The model was supposed to help turn around Volkswagen's fortunes in China, but it struggles to move more than 250 units per month.

That is a very small number for a market of China's size, and for a vehicle that carries so much strategic weight for the brand.

Why the partnership matters

The ID. Unyx 08 is a test of a new approach. Instead of relying only on its own engineering, Volkswagen turned to a local electric vehicle specialist to build a car aimed at Chinese customers. The idea was to combine the group's scale and brand recognition with Xpeng's expertise in technology and software.

So far, the sales figures suggest that this combination has not convinced shoppers. A launch that falls this far short of expectations raises questions about whether a partnership alone can restore the appeal of a foreign brand in the world's most competitive EV market.

What it means for Volkswagen

China has long been one of Volkswagen's most important markets, and the company has been under pressure there as domestic brands gain ground. The ID. Unyx 08 was meant to be an early proof that the Xpeng collaboration could change that trajectory.

A weak start does not necessarily doom the broader plan, and one model is only the first data point. But it puts more attention on what Volkswagen does next: how it prices, positions and markets cars developed with local partners, and whether it can adjust quickly enough in a market that moves fast.

For now, the ID. Unyx 08 stands as a cautionary example. Having a respected partner and a new product is not enough on its own, and Volkswagen will need stronger results from its China-focused lineup to show the strategy is working.
