Sycai Medical Selected for ACCIÓN Hospital Pilot on Liver Tumors
AstraZeneca España, Wayra and Kunsen have chosen Sycai Medical to run the hospital pilot of ACCIÓN, testing AI for liver tumor diagnosis at Sant Pau in Barcelona.

AstraZeneca España, together with Wayra, Telefónica's corporate venture capital arm, and Kunsen, an investor focused on digital health and startup acceleration, has selected Sycai Medical to carry out the hospital pilot of ACCIÓN. The three companies launched the health innovation accelerator in November 2025.
Sycai Medical was one of eight tech companies that went through ACCIÓN's six-month acceleration programme. It will now work with AstraZeneca España and the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona to explore how artificial intelligence can help diagnose liver tumors.
What the pilot will test
The startup builds AI technology that analyzes medical images, detects and monitors pancreatic and liver lesions at an early stage, and integrates into hospital systems. The planned project will assess new tools that could improve how these liver tumors are detected and diagnosed.
The selection was announced on 28 October at the first Health Revolution Congress Madrid, organized by Barcelona & Madrid Health Hub with the backing of the Fundación Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau. The event was also used to present ACCIÓN's results.
Alfonso Martínez, CEO of Sycai Medical, said that being picked from more than 60 startups is a validation of the company's work, and that the pilot is a key step toward turning every abdominal CT scan into an opportunity for early detection.
About the programme
The first edition drew applications from 60 startups and more than 40 healthcare professionals, covering four areas: oncology; cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases; respiratory and immunological conditions; and technological and process challenges in the health system. Eight startups were chosen for the six-month programme, which included one-to-one business mentoring, digital entrepreneurship masterclasses, and workshops on innovation and health economics.
Clinicians raised needs such as identifying cardiovascular risk in COPD patients, predicting exacerbations in severe asthma, assessing the progression of monoclonal gammopathies and improving the management of chronic kidney disease.
Laura Colón, president of AstraZeneca España, said the initiative reflects innovation that starts from real clinical needs and undergoes rigorous evaluation. ACCIÓN has also been named one of El Mundo's 100 most innovative ideas of 2026 and won the 2025 National Informatics and Health Award and the 2026 Ennova Health Award for digital transformation.
