Standard Chartered has launched tokenized deposits in Hong Kong, and the bank says the service is already in live use. China AMC, Finloop and PantherTrade have executed live transactions on it, according to the bank.
Tokenized deposits are digital representations of conventional bank deposits that run on blockchain-based infrastructure. They are meant to let money move and settle in a programmable form while remaining a liability of the bank.
Live transactions from the start
The three named participants are an asset manager, China AMC, and two other firms, Finloop and PantherTrade. The fact that they have already completed real transactions suggests the launch goes beyond a pilot announcement, although the bank did not detail volumes or use cases in the material available.
Why it matters
Hong Kong has positioned itself as a hub for digital-asset and tokenization activity, and a major international lender moving tokenized deposits into live operation adds to that picture. For corporate and institutional clients, the appeal lies in faster, more automated settlement using money held at a regulated bank.
Further details, such as which clients can access the service and how it will be expanded, have not been provided.
