Spotify wants to let users remix popular songs with AI for an extra $4 or $5 a month, with a launch targeted for the first quarter of 2027.

Spotify is preparing a paid AI feature that lets subscribers remix existing songs, with a launch targeted for the first quarter of 2027. The company is weighing an add-on fee of $4 or $5 per month, and an official unveiling could come around the Grammy ceremony in February.

The tool would let users reshape a track directly inside the app, for example turning a folk song into a dance track or creating a version in which one artist performs another's composition. No outside music-production software or specialist skills would be required.

Licensing and artist consent

The plan depends on licences. Spotify has already reached agreements with Universal Music Group, the independent licensing body Merlin and France's Believe, while talks with Sony Music and Warner Music continue.

A label deal will not automatically open an entire catalogue. Individual artists are expected to decide whether their songs can be used by the AI tools. Persuading today's biggest stars is reportedly harder than winning over some veteran acts, and Olivia Rodrigo, signed to Universal, has openly rejected AI use of her music.

How artists would be paid

Spotify is also designing a payout system under which royalties from fan-made remixes go to the original artists. Remixes could be added to playlists, and their plays would count toward the original songs' statistics, affecting their chart positions on the platform.

Co-CEO Gustav Söderström argued at a September investor event that older artists could earn extra income this way, rather than waiting for another musician to cover or remix their work. He also said fan remixes could increase the original artists' share of streaming revenue.

The approach differs from tools such as Suno, which generate entirely new songs from text prompts. Spotify's feature would only modify existing tracks, and only when the artists agree. Pricing outside the US has not been disclosed, but the upper figure is roughly 20 zlotys in Poland, where Premium Individual costs 26.99 zlotys a month.
