Samsung Brings Sleep Apnea Risk Detection to Galaxy Ring and Watch

Samsung has rolled out Sleep Apnea Risk Detection on Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring, making the ring the first smart ring to offer this kind of analysis.

Samsung has officially made its upgraded Sleep Apnea Risk Detection feature available on Galaxy Watch smartwatches and the Galaxy Ring, making it the first smart ring in the world to support this kind of analysis.

The rollout arrives in November, as the company had promised, following approval from South Korea's MFDS regulator last month. Until now, the feature had been available only to Galaxy Watch users in the United States.

How it works

The feature relies on an advanced algorithm that measures vital signs during sleep and produces a detailed analysis of how disturbed a person's breathing is overnight. Users with compatible devices can access it through the Samsung Health Monitor app.

Samsung says it does not need a long history of sleep data. Tracking sleep on just two nights within a ten-day window is enough to obtain a useful and accurate assessment of breathing health during sleep, according to the company.

Regulatory background

The feature first received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration in February 2024. The upgraded version was then cleared by Korea's MFDS in October.

Jongmin Choi, head of the Health R&D Group in Samsung's Mobile eXperience division, said the company has long worked to make sleep monitoring easy and a normal part of daily life. He described the MFDS approval, together with first-ever support on a smart ring, as a reflection of Samsung's commitment to innovation, and said users now have real tools to spot possible early signs of sleep apnea and manage their health better.

For owners of a Galaxy Ring, the update means a device worn comfortably overnight can now flag potential breathing problems, rather than leaving that task to a watch. Samsung frames the approach as flexible monitoring that fits each person's daily routine.
