Preferred Networks Releases PLaMo 3 Translate as Open Weights
Preferred Networks has released PLaMo 3 Translate, a translation-focused local LLM, as open weights in four sizes, including versions small enough for smartphones.

Japanese AI company Preferred Networks released PLaMo 3 Translate on November 5, 2026. It is a translation-specialized local large language model published as open weights and built with the company's own training methods.
The model comes in four sizes: 0.8B, 2B, 8B and 31B parameters. The smaller versions are designed to run on smartphones and laptops, while the largest is aimed at fuller, more demanding deployments.
Performance and licensing
In the benchmarks published with the release, PLaMo 3 Translate outperforms models from Google and Tencent at every size. It succeeds PLaMo 2 Translate, which was already considered capable enough for real-world use, and the new version raises performance further.
Commercial use is permitted for individuals and companies whose revenue in the most recent fiscal year was 1 billion yen or less. Details are set out in the PLaMo Community License.
Early impressions
A hands-on assessment of generative AI output takes time, so early impressions rely largely on experience with the previous version. Even so, the 0.8B model appears to deliver strong results and produces notably fluent translations. At that size it runs quickly on a smartphone.
The reviewer says PLaMo 2 Translate had already become their only tool for English-to-Japanese translation, replacing services such as Google Translate. The open questions are about the 0.8B, 2B and 8B models: how fast and how accurately they translate on ordinary smartphones and PCs.
For users, the release means a free, locally run translator that does not depend on a cloud service. For smaller businesses, the license terms open a route to commercial use without a separate agreement, as long as they stay under the revenue threshold.
