Airbnb Is Building an AI Travel Agent for a 2027 Launch

Airbnb says it is developing an AI agent that builds an interface around your question and will eventually plan a whole trip, with a rollout planned for early 2027.

Airbnb is developing an AI travel agent and plans to start rolling it out to users in the first half of 2027. The company revealed the project in its shareholder letter, published alongside its third-quarter 2026 earnings.

According to the company, the new experience will not be a conventional chatbot. Airbnb said it doesn't believe a "traditional chatbot is the right way to plan a trip." Instead, it is building a new interface that "builds the interface around your question," assembling elements in real time. Those can include maps, photos, itineraries and comparisons, depending on what the user asks.

Booking inside the experience

Airbnb says the agent will let people take action directly within that experience. That most likely means booking a rental from the elements the agent places on the page, although the company has not made clear whether its other services will be available from the start. Over the years, Airbnb has added offerings to its app such as grocery delivery, car rentals and destination-specific rentals including boats and ski gear.

The longer-term ambition is broader. "Over time, we want our agent to help guests plan their entire trip in one place, across homes, hotels, services, experiences and more," the company said. That would push Airbnb beyond short-term rentals and into territory held by online travel agencies and hotel booking platforms.

Building on recent AI features

The letter also covered AI tools Airbnb has already released. A couple of months ago, it launched AI search, which lets users make inquiries in natural language, along with AI-generated descriptions for listings.

For travelers, the shift could mean fewer separate searches and tabs when planning a trip, with results presented as a custom page rather than a chat thread. Details such as the exact launch date, supported markets and which services will be bookable have not been disclosed, and Airbnb has so far only said the rollout will begin in the first half of 2027.
