South Korean app marketplace ONE store is moving beyond app downloads. On November 3, the company announced the official launch of OneDrama, a short-form drama service, and Character Chat, an interactive conversation feature, both built into its main app. The goal, according to the company, is to raise the time users spend in the app by adding video and communication content to its marketplace.

How OneDrama works

OneDrama offers episodes of one to two minutes that can be watched back to back. Users reach it through a dedicated tab at the bottom of the ONE store app or through mobile web. No separate app, extra sign-up or new payment method is needed, because the service runs on existing ONE store accounts and the existing payment system.

At launch, the catalog holds about 120 titles across romance, fantasy and revenge genres. Titles named by the company include 'Chaebol Contract Bride', 'Marriage Encouragement Program Mary' and 'My Boss Is My Ex-Girlfriend'. Each title has some free episodes, and users can unlock more by watching ads or by spending coins earned through attendance and mission rewards.

Until the end of the year, ONE store is also running a promotion for first-time buyers of the 'Weekly Drama Pass', refunding the full payment amount as ONE store points.

Character Chat and creator tools

Character Chat lets users hold real-time conversations with virtual characters. It was previously offered on ONE store's own story platform, OneStory, and now extends to the ONE store app. With this rollout, users can create characters themselves by registering a basic profile, appearance images and conversation patterns.

What comes next

ONE store plans to extend OneDrama, along with its new OneItem service, to global markets and iOS during November. CEO Jang Hyun-guk said the aim is to make OneDrama the largest short-drama library in South Korea, and that an app offering both dramas and games can become an all-in-one entertainment app for the AI era.
