Motorola moto g06 RAM Boost Tested: Can Storage Stand In for Memory?

Motorola's moto g06 can add up to 8GB of virtual memory from its storage. A hands-on test shows it helped keep a Gemini chat alive across app switches.

Verdict: a small but noticeable gain

Motorola's RAM Boost on the moto g06 does not turn the phone into a 12GB device, but in a hands-on test it made app switching feel somewhat better. The feature adds up to 8GB of extra space on top of the phone's 4GB of physical RAM.

What RAM Boost is

RAM Boost uses part of the internal storage as stand-in memory. The idea is old and is known as virtual memory; Windows has offered it for years. It cannot guarantee that apps will never be closed or reloaded, and it is not as fast as physical RAM. Turning it on also reduces the free storage available for photos and apps.

In the moto g06 settings, users can choose Auto, 2GB, 4GB or 8GB. The tester picked the maximum, 8GB.

How it was tested

The tester ran AnTuTu Benchmark with the feature on and off. The overall score was 33,174 points higher with RAM Boost enabled. However, that gap cannot be attributed with certainty to RAM Boost, since the device's state during measurement may also have played a role, and the number says nothing about how switching apps feels.

For a practical check, the tester chatted in Gemini, read Yahoo! News, then opened ten tabs in Chrome for research. With RAM Boost off, returning to Gemini showed a new chat screen. With the 8GB extension on, the same routine brought back the original chat. It still returned to the original chat after five minutes of YouTube and a look at Threads.

The screen alone cannot show whether the app stayed in the background or was restored after a restart, so the result is not conclusive.

Who it is for

The tester found the difference welcome for a workflow of asking an AI mid-research and checking news and video. The trade-offs are clear: no extra physical RAM and less usable storage. For buyers who want to keep phone spending down while improving everyday usability, RAM Boost is an option worth trying to see whether it helps their own usage.
