Mistral AI Buys SkipLabs, Its Fifth Acquisition of 2026
Mistral AI has acquired SkipLabs, a Paris and London firm building faster, safer AI code generation. It is the French company's fifth acquisition this year.

Mistral AI has announced the acquisition of SkipLabs, a company developing technology to make AI-generated code faster, more reliable and more secure. It is the French generative AI company's fifth purchase since the start of the year.
SkipLabs was founded six years ago and operates from Paris and London. Its founder, Julien Verlaguet, previously spent almost nine years as an engineer at Meta. He and his team of engineers and scientists will join the group led by Guillaume Lample, Mistral AI's chief scientist and co-founder.
"I've spent my career designing languages and type systems to catch errors before production," Verlaguet said. According to him, those tools always assumed a human on the other end, someone who reads the error message and decides what to fix. With AI, the author is no longer a person, which means such tools can be reinvented from scratch. At Mistral, he added, these ideas can be pushed into how the models are trained.
A string of acquisitions
The deal follows Koyeb, a cloud specialist, in February; Emmi AI, focused on industrial AI, in May; Pimento, an advertising firm, in September; and New Material, which builds user-experience tools for AI, in October. Together they show Mistral widening its scope beyond building large language models.
The company can afford the shopping spree. Its latest funding round, announced in September, raised an additional 3 billion euros at a valuation of 21 billion euros. It was led by Samsung, with ASML and Nvidia participating.
Not leaving the model race
Mistral originally set out to rival OpenAI and Anthropic, but has increasingly targeted large enterprises, especially in industry, with partnerships including BMW, Airbus, CMA CGM and TotalEnergies.
That does not mean it is stepping back from frontier models. In early October it unveiled Mistral Large 4 (ML4), nicknamed "Le Chonk". The startup says it is the best open-weight model in Europe and the United States. Chinese labs still lead in several rankings, but ML4 stands out in cybersecurity, finance and industrial production use cases.
