Meta Ends New Feature Work for Quest 2 and Quest Pro in 2027

Meta will stop adding new features to Quest 2 and Quest Pro after a final OS update by March 2027, though security patches continue through the end of 2027.

Meta has announced that it will stop developing new features for its Quest 2 and Quest Pro VR headsets. According to a developer blog post published on November 2, the last OS update that adds features will reach all devices by March 2027.

After that, new OS features will be available only on the Quest 3, Quest 3S and later models. Meta now treats the Quest 3 and Quest 3S as its standard headsets for VR gaming and plans to focus development on newer hardware.

Support does not stop immediately

Owners are not being cut off. Meta says security fixes and patches for critical bugs will keep arriving every three months through the end of 2027. The Quest 2 launched in October 2020, and the Quest Pro, released in 2022, is covered by the same plan.

Games already purchased remain usable. Users can still buy and download compatible titles from the store, and cross-play with Quest 3 and Quest 3S continues, so playing with friends on newer headsets is unaffected. Meta Quest Link, which connects the headset to a PC for VR content, also keeps working.

A deadline for new apps

Developers face a cutoff. They can submit new apps for Quest 2 and Quest Pro only until December 2027. From 2028, updates to existing apps are still allowed, but new apps for these two headsets can no longer be submitted.

What it means for owners

There is no need to replace a headset just to keep playing current games. Still, security updates are scheduled to end at the close of 2027, which is the practical point at which owners should think about upgrading. Beyond that, the library of new games for the older hardware will gradually stop growing.
