India Becomes ChatGPT's Largest Market by Weekly Active Users
India is now ChatGPT's biggest market by weekly active users, with its user base doubling since January 2026, OpenAI India MD Prabhjeet Singh said.

India has become ChatGPT's largest market worldwide by weekly active users, and its local user base has doubled since January 2026, according to OpenAI India managing director Prabhjeet Singh. He said Indian users are weaving the chatbot into their daily workflows and finding more uses for it.
The milestone follows earlier signals. Sam Altman called India OpenAI's fastest-growing market and its second-largest by users during a visit last year, and in February 2026 the company said India had more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users. To reach people beyond major cities, OpenAI is expanding Indian-language capabilities and building Android-first products.
Infrastructure and enterprise push
OpenAI is also adding local computing capacity. Its partnership with TCS' HyperVault data centre business starts at 100 megawatts and could scale to 1 gigawatt, and Singh said the company would consider more capacity as infrastructure comes online. The build-out is meant to address enterprise data residency and security needs, while privacy and return on investment remain key adoption questions. OpenAI models are also available through Amazon Bedrock on AWS for local inference, which keeps request processing within India.
Singh said enterprises, global capability centres and startups are moving from pilots to production, citing JioHotstar and Cars24. India is also among the largest and fastest-growing markets for Codex, with notable developer use from tier-II cities. OpenAI is working with government agencies, banks and financial institutions on cybersecurity and on protecting critical infrastructure against AI agent misuse, and Singh backed clear AI regulation to build trust.
Ads and payments
OpenAI is expanding advertising on ChatGPT in India, which Singh said will help support free and lower-priced access alongside paid subscriptions. Through a partnership with Razorpay, its growth marketing platform Engage helps brands prepare product catalogues, run campaigns and measure performance. Early brands include Tanishq, Fastrack, Traya, Tata Neu, Rivaah by Tanishq, Shaadi.com, Axis Max Life, Palmonas and NMIMS.
Singh said the immediate priority is widening AI's impact rather than subscriptions, though paid plans are expected to grow. OpenAI is expected to announce UPI and payments-related news in the coming weeks.
