Honda has shown the RN0, its first high-end electric mountain bike (e-MTB), for the first time at EICMA 2026 in Milan. The bike was developed jointly with German e-MTB maker ROTWILD and weighs about 24 kg.

The development concept is "New Terrain, Same Dream." Honda says it wants to bring the joy of control and the thrill of challenge to a new product field. The company also built mountain bikes in the 2000s, and in 2005 its dedicated downhill machine, the RN01, won the overall UCI Mountain Bike Downhill World Cup series. The RN0 name carries that heritage, standing for "Ride Natural" and "Reach New Peaks."

Frame and chassis

The bike uses an original carbon monocoque frame and a gull-arm swingarm, drawing on Honda's motorcycle know-how. According to the company, the frame is stiff enough for straight-line stability, yet flexes slightly so the tyres follow the surface better in corners.

The frame comes in S, M and L. A FOX fork with 160 mm of travel sits at the front. The wheels are mixed-size: 29 inches at the front to roll over obstacles more easily, and 27.5 inches at the rear for easier handling.

Shimano drive and electronics

Power comes from a new Shimano drive unit weighing 2.3 kg, with maximum torque of 100 Nm and peak output of 750 W. The battery has a capacity of 720 Wh. AUTO ASSIST adjusts assistance to the gradient and pedalling force, while AUTO SHIFT changes gears automatically to keep cadence constant. A further function maintains drive when pedalling briefly stops, helping riders clear obstacles.

A 2.2-inch full-colour display built into the top tube shows speed, range and assist mode. It can also charge smartphones and other devices over USB-C. Through Shimano's app, riders can tune the assist characteristics and lock or unlock the bike's electronic systems.

The announcement marks Honda's entry into the high-end e-MTB market, a segment new to the company.
