Grok Imagine Releases 7-Minute Odyssey Episode, Reviews Are Harsh
Grok Imagine and Wonder Studios published the first seven minutes of an AI-made Odyssey series, Elon Musk's answer to Christopher Nolan's film. Early verdicts are unkind.

Grok Imagine has released the first seven minutes of an AI-generated adaptation of Homer's "Odyssey". The clip went online on 23 October 2026. It was produced with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker, and it follows Elon Musk's promise to deliver a historically faithful rival to Christopher Nolan's film.
From a culture-war promise to a short clip
Nolan's "The Odyssey" reached cinemas in July 2026 and was a major commercial success. Before its release, it drew controversy over casting. Musk openly criticised the choice of non-white and transgender performers. In response he announced his own version, which he said would be faithful to the original spirit of Homer's epic.
Three months later, the result is a seven-minute first episode, not a feature film. It shows Odysseus preparing to sail for Troy, saying goodbye to Penelope, who gives him a wooden horse figurine for their son, and then scenes of war preparations and a growing Telemachus.
Technology impresses, storytelling does not
According to WIRED, Grok itself conceded that the generated production is not historically accurate. The model noted that Homer's epic weaves together mythological, literary and historical threads, and that its events cannot be treated as a verified chronicle.
On the craft side, the picture is mixed. Some frames can briefly pass for real actors and rough seas, which shows how far generative video has come. But faces look overly smooth, teeth and hair look polished, dialogue sounds stiff and lip-sync regularly breaks down.
TechCrunch's Anthony Ha criticised the lack of drama and emotional depth. He said that before the halfway mark he was already watching the progress bar, and he compared the video to a cutscene in a video game that you want to skip.
The release highlights the gap between visual fidelity and storytelling. Generative video can now produce convincing images, but turning them into a narrative that holds an audience is still unsolved. The company has asked viewers in the comments whether they want a full breakdown of how the series was made.
