Google buys Crusoe's Wyoming data centre site to build it itself
Google has acquired Crusoe's data centre site in southeast Wyoming and will build the project itself, a day after pledging $17B for its first facility in the state.

Google has bought Crusoe's data centre site in southeast Wyoming and will build the project itself, Crusoe said on Friday. Neither company disclosed the terms of the deal.
The sale comes a day after Google announced it would spend $17B on its first Wyoming data centre, in Laramie County. It ends Crusoe's early work on the site, which covered choosing the location, winning government approvals and planning the power supply.
From joint plan to Google-only build
Crusoe announced the project in July 2025 together with Tallgrass Energy, which is backed by Blackstone. At the time it said the site could eventually grow to 10 GW. In June, Bloomberg reported that Crusoe was being pushed aside after failing to sign customers, with Google raising concerns about costs and timing.
Crusoe says its business remains strong elsewhere. The company reports more than 6 GW of capacity under contract and over 40 GW in its pipeline. It is also building a data centre campus for Google near Amarillo, Texas, and raised $3.9B at a $30.9B valuation in September. It has landed other customers too, including a deal with Meta in June and a reported $13B contract with Jane Street.
A tougher climate for developers
The handover comes as the political mood around data centres shifts. Bloomberg said several new governors elected this week have promised to rein in data centres, and voters rejected data centres in 40 of 41 local ballot measures.
For developers, the Wyoming case shows how quickly a large project can change hands when anchor tenants are missing and the biggest prospective customer prefers to control construction. For Google, owning the site directly gives it control over a project it has now backed with a $17B commitment.
