Furusato Choice Reopens Web Donations After Data Breach
Trustbank will resume donations on the Furusato Choice web site from noon on November 6 after a breach. All member passwords were invalidated.

Trustbank said on November 5 that it will gradually resume donation intake on the web version of Furusato Choice, its hometown tax donation site, from 12:00 on November 6. The service had been suspended after unauthorized access.
Because the passwords of all members were invalidated, users must set a new password the next time they log in. The mobile app and Choice Pay, the service that lets members receive electronic points as return gifts, will come back at a later date, the company said.
What happened
The site was hit by unauthorized access on October 17, and related services were stopped on October 19. On October 20, Trustbank announced that personal information on 4,454,097 records had been exposed. The data included members' names, addresses, phone numbers, hashed passwords and estimated tax deduction amounts.
The donation management system used by municipalities and businesses that supply return gifts has been restored in stages since October 26.
Safeguards before restart
Trustbank said it implemented the necessary security measures and verified them with outside experts and specialist organizations, and that it confirmed it was safe to resume operations. To prevent a repeat, the company plans to strengthen system monitoring and keep inspecting and improving its systems.
For users, the practical step is to reset the password at the first login after the reopening. The company has not yet given a date for the app or Choice Pay.
