Finn, the German car subscription company, is replacing its chief executive only four months after it became a unicorn. Maximilian Wühr, 31, has to give up the top job. Patrick Oliver Schmidt, an experienced e-commerce manager, takes over as CEO.

The timing makes the move striking. In June 2026, Finn announced a funding round that lifted its valuation to €1 billion. In the accompanying press release, Wühr said the round gave the company "the capital, the partners and the operational foundation to keep scaling Finn efficiently". For him, it marked the high point of seven years spent building the business and the biggest success of his career so far.

A new chief with e-commerce experience

Schmidt comes from the e-commerce sector, which suggests the board is looking for operational experience in consumer-facing online businesses as Finn enters its next growth phase. The company has not been described in the available material as being in difficulty; the change comes right after its largest financing round to date.

Why Wühr had to step aside is the central question around the announcement, and it is the focus of reporting on the background of the handover. The abrupt switch shows that a unicorn valuation does not guarantee a founder stays in the chief executive seat.

What it means

For customers of the car subscription provider, the leadership change does not by itself alter the product. For investors and the wider startup scene, it is another example of founders handing over operational control soon after a major round, when expectations around scale and efficiency rise. How Schmidt shapes Finn's strategy, and what role Wühr keeps, if any, will be the next points to watch.
