EU Commission Demands TikTok Overhaul Its Recommendation Algorithm
The EU Commission is stepping up pressure on TikTok owner Bytedance and wants sweeping changes to the algorithms that recommend videos, including curbs on endless rabbit holes.

The European Commission is escalating its dispute with TikTok operator Bytedance. It is demanding far-reaching changes to the platform's algorithmic recommendation systems, according to the latest reports on the proceedings, which are being conducted under the Digital Services Act (DSA).
The demand targets the so-called rabbit hole effect, in which a feed keeps serving users more and more of the same kind of content. In effect, Brussels wants TikTok to stop its recommendation logic from pulling users into such spirals.
Penalty on the table
The Commission is also threatening TikTok with a penalty if the company does not comply. The tougher tone signals that the regulator is no longer content with talks and wants binding changes to how the feed works.
Why it matters
Recommendation systems are the core of TikTok's product. Any forced change to how videos are selected and ranked could affect how long users stay on the app and how content reaches audiences in the EU. The case is also a test of how strictly the DSA can be enforced against very large platforms.
The details of the required measures and any deadlines were not available at the time of writing.
