Carousell says its live-selling business has grown roughly sixfold since the company pushed the format across its regional markets. Gross merchandise value (GMV) and the number of bidders both rose about 6x in the first five months of the rollout, according to the company.

What the numbers show

GMV measures the total value of goods sold, while bidder numbers show how many users take part in live auctions and sales. Both metrics moving by a similar multiple suggests that growth came from more active buyers as well as more sales, not from a handful of large transactions alone.

The company did not provide further figures in the material available, such as absolute GMV, the number of sellers or the specific markets involved.

Why it matters

Live selling, where sellers present items in real time and buyers bid or buy during the stream, has become a major tactic for online marketplaces looking to raise engagement. For Carousell, a classifieds and second-hand marketplace, the format adds an interactive layer to a business built largely on listings.

The result indicates that the regional push has found an audience in its first months. Whether that pace holds as the base grows larger will be the next test for the feature.
