Wiki.js 3.0 Released: Rewrite Adds Real-Time Editing

Wiki.js 3.0 is a complete rewrite of the wiki software, with real-time collaboration, multi-site management and a feature that flags outdated pages.

Wiki.js 3.0 has been released. The wiki software was rewritten from the ground up and now offers real-time collaboration, management of multiple sites and further new features.

Collaboration and multiple sites

The headline addition is simultaneous editing: several people can work on the same page at once, in the manner of Google Docs. For teams that maintain shared documentation, this removes the need to coordinate who is allowed to edit a page and when.

The new version can also manage several sites. This is aimed at setups in which different projects, teams or audiences each need their own documentation space, rather than running separate installations for each.

Flagging outdated documentation

Another change addresses a familiar problem with internal documentation: content that quietly goes stale. Wiki.js now marks pages as outdated, giving documentation a kind of best-before date. Readers can see at a glance when an article may no longer be reliable, and authors are prompted to review it.

Why it matters

Because version 3.0 is a full rewrite rather than an incremental update, it is a significant step for the project. Existing users should expect a new foundation rather than a simple upgrade of the previous generation, so it makes sense to look at the project's migration guidance before moving an existing wiki.

For teams that rely on self-hosted documentation tools, the combination of live co-editing and freshness tracking brings Wiki.js closer to the workflow of commercial cloud services while remaining software you can run yourself.
