Canva is carrying out a company-wide restructuring that will affect 1,271 employees, about 22% of its global workforce. Some staff will be laid off, while others will be asked to move to the company's central offices.

In an email to employees, CEO Melanie Perkins described the decision as the hardest period in Canva's 13-year history. She said some people's roles would change, while the company would part ways with others.

What the restructuring aims to do

According to the company, the changes are meant to reduce management layers and bring different teams together in the same offices. The move comes as competition driven by AI tools intensifies across the software industry. Companies are racing against new AI-powered rivals while also adding AI features to their own products.

Support for departing staff

Employees who leave will receive at least six months of salary. In countries where health insurance is provided, that coverage will continue for another 12 months. Departing staff can keep their company laptops and apply for grants of up to $10,000 to start their own ventures.

The announcement follows another round of cuts in the sector: Squarespace recently laid off roughly 19% of its employees. Together, the two cases show that tech layoffs are continuing through 2026 as software firms rework their organizations around AI-era competition.
