Russian hosting provider Beget has confirmed the loss of data in its cloud infrastructure following a cyberattack on the night of 2 November. According to the company, attackers broke into its management system and launched scripts designed to delete data. Engineers are still restoring services, and there is no firm date for completion.

What was lost and what survived

Beget says all data was lost in its VPS, S3 and Kubernetes cloud services. Backup copies of VPS files, however, were preserved. Dedicated servers that customers manage themselves have already been restored. On servers administered by Beget, most data survived, but checking and relaunching them is still under way.

The company has also regained control of DNS records for Russian domains and restored 80% of its email service infrastructure. "According to a preliminary assessment, almost 100% of sites hosted on virtual hosting can be recovered," Beget said.

Manual checks on more than 1,000 servers

Specialists must manually inspect more than 1,000 servers for vulnerabilities and malicious scripts, which is why the overall recovery time remains unknown. Beget promised to provide limited access to the control panel for some services within 24 hours.

The company says it found no attempts to download or alter information on servers that stored customer data. Even so, it advised customers to change passwords, access keys and any other credentials that may have been stored on the servers.

For customers, the practical advice is to rotate credentials now and verify their own backups, particularly if they relied on S3 storage or Kubernetes workloads, where Beget reports a complete loss of data. Further updates are expected as the server checks progress and panel access returns.
