Apple Retention Messaging Lets Developers Offer Cancel Deals

Apple has launched Retention Messaging, letting developers show text, images or special offers to subscribers who are about to cancel an auto-renewable subscription.

Apple has made Retention Messaging available to developers, giving them a way to show personalized messages and special offers to users who are in the middle of cancelling a subscription. The company announced the feature at WWDC earlier this year and detailed the launch in a new post on its developer blog.

According to Apple, the messages "appear in the cancellation flow and can include text, images, or a special offer." In practice, a developer could present a discount or a reminder of a subscription's value at the exact moment a user decides to leave.

Reaching users before they leave

This is not Apple's first tool aimed at reducing churn. What sets Retention Messaging apart is timing: it reaches subscribers before the cancellation is completed, rather than after they have already cancelled or let the subscription expire.

How it works

Developers configure the messages in App Store Connect for their auto-renewable subscriptions. Settings include subscriber eligibility and the wait time between messages. Through the Retention Messaging API, developers can also choose which message to show each subscriber based on that person's subscription details. Apple says API access is available by request.

According to Apple's documentation, each app can have up to 10 retention messages, and each message can be tied to one or more subscriptions.

Why it matters

For developers who depend on recurring revenue, the cancellation screen has long been a blind spot. The new tool gives them a sanctioned place inside Apple's own flow to make a final pitch. For subscribers, it could mean better prices on services they were already thinking of dropping, though it also means more prompts during cancellation. How widely developers adopt the feature will determine how visible it becomes.
