Apple Enables Retention Offers When Users Cancel App Subscriptions

Apple has switched on Retention Messages: developers can now show retention offers or news about new features at the moment a user cancels an App Store subscription.

Apple has activated Retention Messages in the App Store. The feature lets developers show users a message during the cancellation of a subscription, such as a retention offer or a note about new features in the app.

What changes for developers

Until now, cancelling a subscription in the App Store was largely a closed process between the user and Apple. With Retention Messages, app makers get a chance to respond at exactly the point where a customer is about to leave. They can use it to present a deal meant to keep the subscriber or to point out functions that may change the user's mind.

Why it matters for users

For subscribers, the change means that cancelling may now come with an additional screen or offer from the app provider. Whether that is a welcome discount or an extra step will depend on how developers use the option. The cancellation itself remains the user's decision.

For subscription-based apps, the tool adds a direct way to reduce churn without leaving the App Store flow. Apple has not yet been quoted here with further details on rules or technical requirements, so how widely and how quickly developers adopt the feature remains to be seen.
