Apple Publishes iPhone Duo Repair Manuals on Launch Day

Apple released step-by-step repair manuals for about 20 iPhone Duo components the day the foldable went on sale, a clear shift from its past stance on repair.

Apple published official repair manuals for the iPhone Duo on the day the foldable went on sale in October 2026, a notable reversal for a company that once restricted independent repair through serial-number parts pairing and lobbying against right-to-repair laws.

The manuals cover roughly 20 to 22 components, including displays, batteries, the logic board, cameras and the USB-C connector. They include step-by-step instructions, diagrams, tool lists and safety guidance, plus videos for handling broken glass and the Duo's dual-battery design.

Manuals first, parts later

The Duo is mechanically complex: two displays, two batteries and a hinge with more than a hundred precision parts. Several early owners reported the inner display cracking along the hinge after fewer than 20 folds, and one verified Australian case occurred after six hours. Apple swapped some units under warranty, but an out-of-warranty inner-display repair costs $999.

Self-repair parts for the Duo are not yet available. With the iPhone 18 Pro, parts reached the Self Service Repair Store about a month after launch, so Duo parts could appear around November 2026, though that is speculation. Publishing documentation is cheaper and faster than manufacturing, serializing and distributing parts, and it comes as EU ecodesign rules and the Right to Repair Directive, which member states had to adopt by July 31, 2026, raise the pressure.

Apple still sets the terms. The hinge is not sold separately, so damage means replacing the entire inner display assembly. Displays, batteries and cameras still require serial-number pairing and Repair Assistant steps, and skipping them can disable features or trigger warnings.

The wider industry

Google has published manuals for the whole Pixel 11 lineup, including the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, and Samsung offers parts and manuals for recent Galaxy S and Z Fold models. iFixit gave the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold provisional repairability scores of 4 out of 10, and rated the iPhone Duo 5 out of 10, calling it the most repairable foldable.

Much of the progress follows state laws in New York, California, Minnesota, Oregon, Colorado, Washington, Connecticut and Texas. The remaining fights are about affordable parts, calibration tools and modules manufacturers will not sell separately, areas where Apple keeps control of price and access.
