Anthropic Stops Claude From Cloning Existing Video Games
Anthropic has updated Claude so it will no longer help users recreate a specific existing video game, even if the clone is renamed or described as original.

Anthropic has added new restrictions that stop its AI model Claude from recreating existing video games one-to-one. After the update, Claude will not help users reproduce a specific game, and renaming the game or presenting the project as original will not get around the limit.
The change was first spotted by a user on X. Addy Osmani, who works on Anthropic's technical team, then confirmed the update in a post on the platform. He said the company wants to steer Claude away from rebuilding a particular game that belongs to someone else. According to Osmani, such use infringes intellectual property rights and violates Anthropic's usage policies.
Original projects are unaffected
The restrictions are not aimed at developers building their own games. Users can still ask Claude to design new projects in a given genre, or to build a game with their own designs and visual assets.
A busy period for AI game remakes
The update comes as more people use AI tools to rebuild existing titles. Fan projects made with AI assistance have recently produced browser-playable versions of games such as Halo: Combat Evolved, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Grand Theft Auto V.
Copyright has already been a sore point for Anthropic. Last year the company agreed to a $1.5 billion settlement in a class action brought on behalf of 500,000 authors, who alleged that their copyrighted works were used to train AI models. More recently, the heirs of Elvis Presley sued the company on similar grounds.
For game developers and hobbyists, the practical message is clear: Claude remains a tool for original work and genre-inspired projects, but not for copying a specific commercial title.
