Ant International and a group of banks have completed transfers of Hong Kong dollar (HKD) tokens, with each transfer taking up to five minutes from the payment instruction to final receipt of funds.

The five-minute figure covers the full journey of a payment: from the moment the instruction is issued to the moment the recipient has the money in final form. That end-to-end measure is the one that matters most for businesses moving money across borders, where delays are often the main pain point.

Why it matters

Tokenized forms of bank money are being tested as a way to make payments faster and more predictable. A completed set of HKD token transfers shows that the approach can work in a live setting between a payments company and financial institutions, rather than only on paper.

For companies that pay suppliers, staff or partners in Hong Kong dollars, a transfer that settles within minutes could reduce the time funds spend in transit and make cash management simpler.

What is still open

The announcement does not detail the volumes involved, the names of every participating bank or a timeline for commercial rollout. It is also unclear how the results would translate to higher transaction values or other currencies. Those points will determine whether the transfers remain a successful trial or become a regular service.
