YouTube Tests Tamba, a Social Network-Style App With Group Chats

Code in the latest YouTube app for Android references Tamba, a service with follows, direct messages and group chats that could serve as a testing ground.

References to a new service called Tamba have turned up in the code of the latest YouTube app for Android. Its feature set resembles a social network, and YouTube appears to be testing it.

What Tamba offers

According to the code, Tamba would let users follow other people, exchange direct messages, and send photos, videos and voice messages. It also includes group chats, posts, reactions and its own feed. Users could watch Shorts directly inside chats.

Some of these tools already exist in the main YouTube app. Direct messaging is one example, so Tamba does not start from zero. What stands out is how the functions are bundled into a single social-style experience.

Standalone app or sandbox?

The code also contains signs that Tamba may be built as a separate service for Android and iOS. It has its own icons, a sign-up screen and a dedicated activity feed, which points to more than a hidden menu inside YouTube.

It remains unclear whether Tamba will launch as an independent platform. One possibility is that it works as an experimental sandbox, a place where YouTube tries out new features before deciding what to bring to the main app.

Why it matters

For a platform built around video, deeper social tools such as private conversations, group spaces and follower connections could keep people engaged between uploads and make sharing videos with friends easier. YouTube has not announced Tamba, so the details may change or the project may never reach users.
