The digital rights association None of your business (Noyb) has filed five complaints against the start-up Scale AI in four European countries. The filings, submitted on 27 October 2026, were lodged in France, Italy, the Netherlands and Austria.

Noyb worked with three partner organisations on the case: Intérêt à Agir, DiPLab and Reversing.Works. The complaints target Scale AI, a company known for supplying the human labour behind artificial intelligence, the so-called data workers who label and review content used to train AI models.

Why the case matters

The title of the complaints' coverage raises a pointed question: whether these workers, often described as the "small hands" of AI, have been monitored without their knowledge. The material available at this stage does not detail the specific allegations, the legal provisions invoked or the authorities handling each filing, so those points remain to be clarified.

Still, the choice of four separate jurisdictions suggests a coordinated push to have European data protection regulators look at how the company treats the people who perform this work. For the wider AI industry, which relies heavily on outsourced annotation and moderation, the case could turn attention to working conditions and workers' data rights, an area that has so far drawn less scrutiny than the models themselves.

What comes next

The national authorities that received the complaints will now decide how to proceed. Whether they open investigations, coordinate with one another or reach a decision is not yet known, and no response from Scale AI is available in the material provided.
