PFN releases PLaMo 3 Translate, an offline AI translator
Preferred Networks has released PLaMo 3 Translate, an open-weight model covering 53 languages that runs on phones, PCs and company servers without the cloud.

Preferred Networks (PFN) released PLaMo 3 Translate on November 5, a translation-focused AI model offered as open weights. Users can download it and run it on smartphones, PCs or in-house servers, so source text and translations never have to be sent to the cloud, and translation works offline.
The model is the one behind the company's AI translation service PLaMo Translate. It supports 53 languages, including Japanese and English. The weights are published on Hugging Face in four sizes: 0.8B (800 million parameters), 2B, 8B and 31B, so developers can pick one that fits their use case and hardware.
Offline and private by design
Embedded in a device app, the model can translate without any internet connection. PFN has published a demo in which the smallest 0.8B model translates on a smartphone in airplane mode. Run on self-managed devices or servers, it can also process sensitive material such as contracts and research and development documents without sending it outside the organization.
Quality and features
In PFN's own comparison, even the smallest model scored higher on translation quality than Google's TranslateGemma and Tencent's Hy-MT2. The model supports glossaries for fixing translations of proper nouns and technical terms. For Japanese output, users can also choose between the polite "desu/masu" style and the plain "da/dearu" style.
Licensing
Companies and individuals whose revenue in the most recent fiscal year was 1 billion yen or less can use the model free of charge, commercially or not, under the PLaMo Community License. Commercial use beyond the scope of that license requires a separate commercial license agreement with PFN.
